Do any kids ever TRY to use martial arts in any school fight?
In most of the school fights I've looked up on the internet (Educational schools: Not those dojos or anything), I haven't found a single fight that included a kid using martial arts. I just don't get it: in most of these fights, I see a bunch of wild punches. Why can't they add a little bit of "flare" to help them win their fights? (Judo moves, Muay Thai Kicks, etc.)
One of the reasons why you don't see a whole lot of martial artist in those videos is because not everyone knows karate, kung fu, judo, etc. There about 300 million people in the U.S. of those according to surveys done by sports companies only about 6 million (rough estimate) practice martial arts. That's a very small percentage of the population.
Another reason is because martial arts schools usually teach their students to use their mouths and brains first. Fighting is a last resort for when you can't walk away.
As for adding "flare" to fights. To me "flare" means fancy flashy stuff. Techniques like jump spinning round kicks or complicated aikido type wrist throws. Stuff that look good in the movies but will get you beat down in a real fight.

Well think about it this way, why would he combine them as a marketing/advertising sham? He would actually make more money if he taught them separately, because he would have MORE testing, and MORE classes. Maybe he wanted to be original, or didn't have enough instructors to teach them separately. Hard to tell without actually knowing him or asking him.
BTW most forms of karate include grappling as part of the curriculum. So that might be your "unknown form of jiu jitsu". Or it could just be japanese jiu jitsu.
As far as legitimate, check out the class yourself. Have someone experienced go with you.
