Sheath Cleaning Qustion?

I've just tried cleaning my horse's sheath for the first time. Got the Excalibur, got the shoulder-length rubber gloves.

But how (without sedatives) can you get him to drop it?

My horse is EXTREMELY shy about that.... he won't pee anywhere but in his stall, and even then, not if anyone is around. He NEVER just lets it hang. So last night I just started to get him to relax a bit, and then something startled him and he pulled so far up I couldn't even feel it anymore. Needless to say, made it hard to adequately clean.

Suggestions?
Zakiit: I realize the sheath and "that bit" (the penis) are not the same thing, but I was trying to avoid using the word "penis".
Now, as far as I'm aware, you do have to clean that as well, and in fact check for, and remove, any bean you find inside it's tip.

My horse has a sheath condition that means I have to clean it DAILY!!! I've been doing this for the past two years & saw your question & thought I'd be able to help with that topic!

My horse has gotten so used to me cleaning his sheath that he drops it whenever I walk into his paddock BUT it took a while to gain his trust & for him to feel safe enough to do that. If I try to do it with other people around, he won't drop it or if the vets come out to have a look they have to give him a mild sedation to get him to drop it. There are alot of websites that describe how to do it but my best advice is gain his trust, start by cleaning the sheath area, don't be afraid to reach right up, you'd be amazed (or grossed out) at how deep it goes! Also, look at pictures of the anatomy & become familiar with the different parts so you're not just poking around.

Also, the best thing to use to clean the sheath is a herbal soap from the health food store followed by some vegesorb or paw paw ointment after it's been thoroughly dried. The last thing you want to do is mess with their natural bacteria etc.

If you want to discuss it further feel free to email me.

EDIT: There are alot of thumbs down here & I just wanted to say (believe me or not) that I haven't been the one doing it.

Also, I have removed several beans, if your horse hasn't been cleaned in a long time it'll more than likely be there, sometimes it's small & is more like a little marble rather than bean shaped - again, you'll need a fair bit of trust to get to this stage. Good luck!
