What's the best way to begin sorting out boxes of old books and selling them on e-bay?

I've recently acquired from a closing-down book cafe shelves of books. There must have been a few thousand books there because it arrived by a lorry. My problem now is the books are packed randomly into boxes and I have no clue how to start sorting them properly so I can sell them on ebay? Any ideas?

There are several options. First of all you don't usually get a lot of money from selling books online unless you have a group of books. So sort out by author and put up for auction as a set.

There are also some great websites that allow you to trade books, CD's, DVD's etc. See my profile for link to titletrader and paperbackswap. This allows you to get rid of an item you no longer want and get something you do want in return. Titletrader is awesome because you can trade books, dvd's, cd's, games and vhs tapes. So if you get rid of a book you may be able to get a dvd in exchange. Paperbackswap is only for books. I have found that doing ebay or amazon is pricey cause you don't really get your money's worth for these items and you have to pay fees etc.

For books that you can't get rid of you can donate to your local library.

Could you send a box of books or goods to prison?

I have a nephew in jail and I was wondering what could we send and what can't we send to prison. He was asking for books, cds, small combs for his hair cutting business. So I just wanted to know.

It depends. Jail and prison are two separate facilities ran by different areas. It will depend on which state you are in. If you list the state, I can find the answer.
In CA, a package sent must be ordered from a secure vendor. There is also a weight limit and packages are only allowed quarterly.
There is a canteen at all prisons and the inmates can spend their money there... so sometimes money is easier to send than a package.

   Davids* gave you a really good answer.

   1) EBAY: You can set a min reserve price…or a start price on ebay.

   2) CRAIGSLIST: awesome idea! It's pretty easy to post there

   3) GOOGLE GROUPS:

   Look for sale groups for you city/school. e.g "houston.forsale" for city, or "tamu.forsale" for schools …

   4) FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE: If you're on facebook, they've come up with a marketplace section there for all the networks you're part of…so this way, you can limit the psoting to fellow students at school, or local residents. And it;s free!

   As for the price… with newer technology coming out (dual core, 1GB+ ram etc)…I'd say 400 would be a good guess. Though I hope you get more $$ for school!
