Boxing Stand Boxing I am a boxing purest. Who's style is more pleasing to watch?
Floyd Mayweather's or Manny Pac Man just from a boxing stand point. Mayweather's foot work is a thing of beauty Manny's foot work needs a lot of work. The sharp punches of Money or the clubing punches of Manny.
Great job Peter H
I think a purist can appreciate both as they exemplify two extremes of the sport.
The current version of Manny is really a sublime pressure fighter - I wouldn't have said that 3 years ago. If you watch how he is knocking these bigger guys down and out, it comes from this amazing agility and ability to exchange in flurries slightly shift and counter. He is in and out, but always moving in attack mode. He has great speed and power. What seperates him and makes him unique is his overall agility, coordination and much improved balance - the shots he knocked Hatton, Marquez and Cotto with were basically unstoppable because he was able to put himself in a position that they aren't equipped to defend against...which is why they look so out of sorts when they get hit.
Mayweather has gotten a bit of a bad rap for his style recently - he has always been a defensive fighter, but he can turn boxer/puncher in the blink of an eye. Clearly he has all the fundamentals mastered, he has terrific positioning and use of angles, he knows how to create his distance and throw those great lead right hands. What puts a lot of people off I think is that, with his speed he should be throwing more punches in combination. As great as he is, he can be almost too cautious, he rarely throws more than 2-3 punches in combination, and once he does there is always a long lull before he does it again. For Mayweather I think the preception is that he believes his obligation is to get people to tune in, period, once they have spent the money his job is done and he just has to score more points than the other guy.

How to prevent Stand up boxing bag from moving?
My girlfriend recently got me a Century Wavemaster Super X Combo for my birthday. If you don't know, its a free standing punching bag with target circles on the front. Fill it with water. sand, bacon or whatever, to keep it immobile while you treat it just like a standard hanging heavy bag.I was thrilled with this idea!! Right now its in my living room. I took some spare carpet and have it sitting on that filled with a combination of sand and water.
My question is this.. Even with the stand filled as much as possible with sand and water, I am still able to hit the bag hard enough for it to gradually slide off the carpet. I'm not wailing on it, it doesn't take much to move it. Is there any way to do something to keep this stand from moving when hit it?
Right now I might throw three jabs, and have to go around to the other side to counter-shift it back into place. It's kind of annoying. Any ideas?
Those Wavemasters DO tend to shift and move.
In the boxing world they're often called 'pillar bags', because they stand like a pillar holding up a ceiling.
Carpet really isn't the best surface to plant those on.
I would lean more toward simple puzzle mats, which you can buy in any sporting goods store.
Even still... that bag's probably going to scoot a little on you.
Move AROUND the bag as you punch. That's what you'd do in a boxing match, right? If you move around it as you punch the bag will still scoot a little, but you should be able to keep it in a ballpark area on your floor.
If that really doesn't tickle your fancy... you can always run down to the home improvement store and buy some good old fashioned sandbags to lay around the base of the sucker, but you'll just wind up having to reset the bag and the anchoring sandbags here and there too.
We have a couple of these in our boxing gym, and frankly, we just accept that they'll scoot a little and circle the bag as we work out, to make sure that the bag doesn't scoot into the next county on us.
If you had a hanging heavy bag... that sucker would probably swing on you and force you to move around it anyway, just to keep it under control enough so you could keep punching it... so really... my advice is just to accept that the thing will move a little and 'work with it'.
