How do you know words are masculine or feminine?

Why 'clases' is feminine? Hammer, box, wall, clock, how do you these words are feminine or masculine? Do you just have to memorize it or is there any other way? I take final exam this week. I really need to know.
The majority of nouns ending in "o" are masculine, but there are a few exceptions: "radio", "mano" (hand) and "disco" (short for "discoteca") are feminine (when disco means "disk" or "record" it's masculine).
The majority of nouns ending in "a" are feminine, but there are many exceptions:
mapa, problema, tema (theme), and many other words ending in -a (most of them derived from Greek rather than Latin) are masculine.
All words ending in -dad are feminine (la felicidad, la ciudad, la bondad, etc) as are all words ending in -ción (la explicación, la estación, la facción, etc.
The rest you just have to memorise.
A few feminine words ending in -a take el instead of la as the definite article when they go directly after the definite article: these are nouns beginning with stressed a-, or ha-: el agua, el hada (the fairy), el águila (the eagle); when they do not come directly after the article, they take "la": la otra hada - the other fairy, la gran águila - the great eagle, etc.

I worked at Fred Meyer one summer. They also accept returns without receipts. (The electronics department has different rules though.) It doesn’t need to even be something they sell. A woman once brought a wall clock that she claimed she bought at a different Fred Meyer about 2 years prior. We didn’t have the item, so we didn’t even know how much it cost. I was told to find a similar sized clock and let the customer service desk know how much money to give her.
