How to NOT make a weighted companion cube
Why is MMA weigh-in the day before the fight?
Why isn't it done immediately before? It seems pointless to have a weigh-in if the fighter can walk into the cage 10-20lb heavier than he weighed in at. I don't see the connection between being a pro at cutting weight and being a good fighter.
Not all fighting organizations do that. Some employ 30 day weigh-ins, same day weigh-ins, 2-hour weigh-ins, etc. The biggest reason the main fight organizations do that is probably because the day before weigh-in can become an event in itself and really hype up a fight. When the circumstances are right and the weigh-in becomes a event, demand for fight tickets, pay-per-view sales and betting all increase.
What if a fighter didn't make weight? An MMA event could still go on if one of the fighters in the main event didn't make weight because they have so many fights but a boxing match would just be flat out cancelled or become relatively pointless, hours before the fight. Fans would be completely ticked. In either case, MMA or boxing, betting would suffer. I don't know how much betting really goes on in MMA fights but I think it would decrease substantially if people didn't even know the fighters made weight until 1-2, maybe even 6 hours before the event?
