What auto focus setting do I use on my Canon Rebel XS?
I am taking pictures of my infant crawling around. He moves unpredictably and I don't understand the difference between "single shot" "AI Focus" and "AI Servo". I'd like to keep his face in focus. What would be most appropriate?
When in "Single Shot" the idea is that when you partially depress the shutter button to use the auto focus the focus "locks." This means that if you move the camera around to look at something else while continuing to hold the shutter button down, the camera will not re focus on the new area. This is helpful if you are only using a single focus point (you can change the focus point, refer to your manual) and want to focus on an area and then recompose. Usually its best for still shots or where you are not trying to focus on a moving object.
AI focus (when you are using the center AF point) will do the same as single shot, but if your subject starts moving will switch to AI Servo.
AI Servo is a continually focusing mode. This is the mode for fast moving objects. It continually tracks the subject, refocusing all the time for as long as you are depressing the shutter button to focus.
Again all of this is explained in your manual. You can either just go with single shot and snap a picture at a still moment, or maybe AI focus would be good for you.

how do you take a self portrait in motion- your face in focus, background blurred?
any suggestions?
set your camera on a table (or fasten it to a tripod) and put back away from were you are standing focus it on something as far back as you are standing so you will not be blurred. (it is necessary that you get the camera back and then zoom in to the desired crop as the background will not be blurred when its not zoomed in.

Single Shot is simplest and just focuses on where the camera thinks it should be focused and then does not refocus if your subject moves.
AI Focus has a better understanding of where you want to focus, but can be readjusted.
AI Servo is usually used for fast moving objects (aka animals or your baby) and continuously adjusts focus for that moving object.
AI Servo would be best.
