i have a 55 chevy Bel Air 2 dr. hardtop sport coupe. the orig. eng was the 265ci with 3 sp. on column. Now it?
has a 327 w/ about 400 hp. Still has the original rear end. my question is.-- what gears can go straight in? I'd like to get somewhere near 3.56
Not a problem, this car was very popular during those hot rodding days in the 60's. You probably have the 10 bolt unit in there right now. Just count the # of bolts around the rear differential cover. Either 10 bolts or 12 if the rear was swapped out a long time once before you owned it. Jegs, Summit racing or any local speed shop can find the right gear ratio for your application. When i drove my 55, 56 and 57 chevies back in the day, i ran everything from 3;73 to 4;56 gears. All depending on the engine and trans you are running.

Cross country drive, prelim check list inquiry?
OK, I have done a cross-country trip 4x, this will make 5. But I am doing it in a vehicle that normally takes 5w-30 full syn. I am looking for input from the gear-heads (i say it with love), for the coming drive should I go to a 10w-30. Heavier than mfg'r recommended.
Conditions: June top part of US; highway driving +80%
Vehicle: 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7L V6; 34,000 orig very well maintained
Stick with the synthetic. Check the air filter- replace, plugs, coolant, tires, transmission and power steering fluid, pcv valve. Hope this helps.
