Proposed and stops calling?

Back around New Year's my boyfriend proposed and I accepted. He is in Italy I am in the US. After I got back home I was out shopping and took off my glove-- the stone from the ring ripped off. I brought it to the jeweler, they told me it was worth $20-- he said it was worth $500 when he gave it. I called him, tried to tell him that although I knew the truth I still loved him, but the phone died. This was Feb. I tried calling the next day, no answer. I decided he needed space. Never heard from him again.
His mom is a close friend of mine, she told me the week after he told her 'I prohibit you to give her my new phone number or else I'll never set foot in this house again. I will call her when I want." Nothing yet...
Now the mom (I'm still in touch) is trying to get me to go back to Italy in March (I also have family there). I am afraid. He doesn't have a girlfriend and is changing his life but I worry: will I be hurt again? What would you do? He always asks her about me-- why?

he is a rude jerk and you deserve better. don't let him back in your life if he is just going to do this crap again, MOVE ON!
