Braces help ..............?
Hey, im a 17 years old guy, and i have to get braces soon because i have an hude overbite and very crowded teeth. What is the whole process of getting braces put on.My ortho said i might need headgear and a expander . He wont tell me untill my braces appointment. I just got spacers put in yesterday. Is there any rules you have to follow. Will i need a special mouth guard to play sports, preferably basketball ?
With braces your not suppost to eat chewy/hard food. Like pizza crust, gum, and gummies [Stuff along those lines.] Usually they give you a piece of paper after you get them on. With mine I have to be extra careful cause I have clear braces[I'm allergic to nickel so I couldn't get the regular ones.] The process is: they put metal bands around your molars, they glue brackets to each tooth then put on the wires. The expander is the thing that sucks. I have one cause my top jaw was apparently so small[even though I beg to differ cause I have a big mouth xD]. Its essentially a metal bar. Mine is on my top jaw and on my first set of molars. There's this key thing they give you to tighten it and it spreads your jaw apart[until it breaks, or until the ortho is happy how it is]. You can go to google and search 'expander for teeth' and go to images and see it. With the mouthguard, I'm not sure cause I'm a girl and I don't play sports. haha. Anyways, braces aren't that bad. I think they make people look cuter. I had a tooth on my top that was over-lapping another and now it's almost perfectly straight and I got my braces on Halloween of 2009. So not that long ago. If your teeth are messed up and you start to see a difference it gives you a whole new confidence. In the end I think you would be happy with yourself if you did get them. Hope I helped [:

I'm 15 and I just got my braces off. I also wore an expander and retainer for a long time. The expander is the worst. If you get the kind that cranks, take pain killer before you turn it for the first few days. Braces are much easier. You will be sensitive for a week or so. Try not to bite into hard things. A callus will develop on your upper and/or lower (depending on which set of teeth you have braces on). You will have to learn to use wax. It takes a while to get the hang of putting it on (and making it stay there). Get a tube of Orajel. This stuff numbs whatever you put it on. Use it on wire the wires rub on your mouth and also the inside of your lips. It can be useful when your teeth start to move as well. Spacers pop out easily, so be careful. The headgear is usually a type of last resort. You usually have to wear them only at night, so if you are worried about looking like a geek, don't. I played softball and I wore a mouth guard that they made special to fit over the braces. They are actually more comfy than the normal ones. Don't sweat it. It should come free with the braces of you ask them about it. There are lots of rules that you should follow when wearing orthodontics, such as no pop, popcorn, gum, etc. STAY AWAY from sticky foods (caramel, gum, candy) and popcorn (it hurts). Just make sure you brush after everything else and floss CONSTANTLY or your breath will stink and your teeth will look terrible. As your orthodontist questions BEFORE they begin the process- and always get a second opinion.
