Heavy Punching Sparring
What do you do to counter/get around a stiff, quick jab?
I was sparring with a friend at the gym and I couldn`t get around his jab. He is a little taller and about 30 pounds heavier so when he throws his jabs I feel it! What do I do to get around it? how do I get myself in a better position to counter punch?
That's a good question. A good quick jab is one of the hardest punches to avoid. You know the old saying "if you have a good jab, boxing is easy". But it can be done. Assuming that your friend is an orthodox fighter, in order to avoid their hjab there are a few things you can try.
1. Keep you right hand in front of your nose and mouth. Carry your right hand loosley here when you are fighting someone with a good jab. The jab is quicker than the hook, so having the right hand ready to defend against the jab, as opposed to up by the temples to defend against the hook, is a good idea. Practice keeping that hand in perfect position to parry the jab at all times, ecpecially when you are jabbing.
2. Keep moving your head. If you keep moving your head and feinting with your upper body your opponent will be forced to jab at a moving target, which is much more difficult. Also get into the habit of moving your head after every punch or combo you throw. Believe me, the counters will sail over your head.
3. Move to your right. Most people move to their left, and a good jabber can catch someone in between their hands when they move to their left. If you move to your right, the timing and placement on your opponent's jab will be messed up, and they will have a harder time making contact.
4. Smother their jab. A good jabber likes to keep you on the end of his jab so he can keep snapping it out there. But the jab is a shot that doesn't really work at close range. So the next time your opponent jabs, parry it and take quickly move forward so that you are in range to throw body shots or short hooks. This will neutralize their good jab. A variation of this is to parry the jab, and then almost in the same motion, shoot an overhand right over their jab before they can bring the left hand back to their face. Remember to step in with the punch too.
