OK well a karate instructor just started doing BJJ most likely because i stay in contact with him and i told him an he said he would try it out. Well i have seen him at tournaments an he sucks so bad. But he is going to start teaching his students it. I got in a argument with a friend trying to say that he can't be teaching the kids and adults this cause he isn't a proper BJJ instructor and he doesn't have proper paper to allow him to promote people in this sport and if someone gets hurt. Is it still allowed or not cause i personally think he has no right doing that i mean he is a KARATE instructor.
This dude is Karate no were near the arts of even being considered a wrestler.. but w.e
I am also a Karate Sensei and I am licensed to teach and promote Judo but not Jujutsu even though I have studied it for many years. We may do some technical and application training from the Japanese Jujutsu systems I studied but I would never promote anyone in them because I am not licensed to do so...but that does not stop most people. Personally I agree with sharing knowledge with your students but one must be honest about what they know and their limitations to both teach as well as promote people in the art.
There are five MMA schools that popped up in our general area in the last three years. Two of them have legit teachers in Jui Jutsu and other systems and the other three have some kids who fought a few times now promoting people to black belts in various systems. There are also two traditional schools in our area that promote people in some made up martial art system of which they include Jujutsu and other arts it is clear they have no training in at all or very very little.
The problem is that there is no legal way to stop them from misleading the public. All a good martial artist can do is sit back, wait and educate others on real arts, their training, application and abilities.
One thing that I know is true is that if you are teaching some BS eventually a student will realize it and leave your school for another. I have several here from those forementioned schools and they had to relearn everything. I felt their pain but the best thing I could do is teach them the correct way instead of improving their bad habits.
It all boils down to the integrity of the dojo and the Sensei.

which karate for mma?
i am training in bjj and muay thai. so please only comment about the karate part of the mma training.
machida shows that karate is effective in mma. he trains in shotokan, i was wondering if their is a more effective form of karate to pursue which will be benefitial for an mma career. and if so, what makes it special?
in response to jake lo -- yea i want to know if any specific form of karate can help me with these attributes. i am fascinated in his speed, unorthodox stances and defensive skills..
any thoughts on kajukenbo?
“Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system.” -Bruce Lee
no style is more effective than another. otherwise every Shotokan tournament would be a draw and every military would use it. and no one would ever get mugged.
for MMA some styles like Goju-Ryu and Wado-Ryu would get you DQ'd but are EXTREMELY effective on the streets.
for MMA i'd say Shotokan, Kyokushin, or Isshin-Ryu would fit in with the rules the best
***EDIT***
Ahhh, Kajukenbo. i almost forgot this one. it would probably one of the better options for MMA. it's more of a hybrid art than traditional Karate-do. it combines Judo, Kenpo, Boxing and some things for various Ryu's of Karate. i like it and i'd go for it if i was you.
the only thing, while it DOES incorperate Judo i dont know how much of that would be ground fighting so you might need a BJJ or Sambo class as well
Hi Glen! I did a combat AIM with the one and only Rach in September when she was here in the UK. It was awesome. Tanya Walker was there too. We started off presenting a track and got feedback. Then we spent the rest of the day learning about and practicing drills in various martial arts – tae kwon do, karate, MMA, kickboxing, capoeira, etc etc. We learnt to count to 10 in Japanese and Korean (well I already knew Korean from my TKD days!). It was exhausting but great, you really got a feel for all the different martial arts we incorporate into bodycombat. At the end of the day we presented our tracks again being asked to incorporate what we had learnt and got more feedback. Not sure if yours will be exactly the same format as that, but I will look forward to hearing all about it! Enjoy!!
