Cincinnati Boxing $24.69 On August 29, 1885, Cincinnati was the scene for the first modern heavyweight championship boxing match using gloves. The Boston Strong Boy, John L. Sullivan, met Dominick McCaffrey at the citys Chester Park that day and came away with the referees decision. By this time, Cincinnati had been a noted boxing site since the Civil War years, and over the next several decades, it developed a remarkable number of fine boxers in both the professional and amateur ranks. Out of the many gymnasiums in OvertheRhine and the West End came world champions such as Freddie Miller, Ezzard Charles, Bud Smith, and Aaron Pryor. This book is the story of a fascinating aspect of Cincinnatis great sports heritagethe boxing gamewith all its leatherpunching drama. From the frontierlike matches of the 19thcentury river town to the urban ethnic and social influences of the 20th and 21st centuries, Cincinnati Boxing brings a rich part of local history to life. Joel Chapman vs Matt Ignasiak 2 undefeated fighters going at it!
Why do boxers and boxing fans think that modern boxing is the same as thing as the old bare knuckle style?
Every modern boxers and boxing fans I know think that the boxing is today is the same thing as the boxing in the Bare knuckle era.But they are two different things! In the Bare Knuckle era(up to John L.Sullivan`s time),wrestling was originally part of boxing! Also, long before the 1700`s,boxers used kicks a lot(the kicks boxers back then used came from another ancient British martial art,Shin Kicking)! And up until the era gloves were used in boxing, many boxers used dirty tricks such as eye-gouging!Also,during the time of Ancient Greece and ancient Romes, boxers were allowed to stomp on their opponents after knocking them on the ground!Modern boxing is a martial sport, not a martial art!Bare Knuckle boxing, the original martial art form of modern boxing,is the true thing! What is up with this?
I know why you think that modern boxing fans think that our boxing is the same as that from 200+ years ago.
Boxing as the sport it is today is only really traced back to the 1800s when the world heavyweight title was first contested (won over 80 rounds). Even then those guys are never really compared to modern boxing, only those from the early 20th century onwards are compared to todays boxers.
Obviously the name of the sport descends down that far but it is pretty commonly accepted that back then things couldnt have been more different to how things are now.
Some people might talk about boxing history saying that it has origins dating back that far but so do fans of athletics and other sports even though the way it is carried out in todays era is markedly different to 200 years ago.
