What is the difference between smooth and full grain leather?

Difference in texture? Feel? Quality?

When leather is tanned it is split to provide a workable thickness of leather.
The Full grain leather is the top split of this leather and would have originally had the hair on its top surface. Sometimes they have to remove a fine layer from the outer surface to remove marks made by branding, insect damage, barbed wire damage etc. this is then known as top grain. Full grain is when the leather is totally intact and has not been corrected or altered in any way.

A lot of leather does not have a prominent natural grain pattern (this is usually printed or embossed into the leather) so a Full Grain leather could be quite smooth or it could have a printed grain pattern.

Some leathers are plated which can also produce a very smooth finish and these could be full grain or top grain.

Full grain leather is always the best quality of leather and will feel softer than leather that has been corrected and pigment coated.

   The easiest way to do that is to use your staple gun where you want the buttons to go to give it a tufted look – then you can glue the buttons on – they sell kits that you can cover the buttons with extra fabric or different fabric

   LOL. Well, she had on a short skirt, dark net stockings and little ankle boots with stilleto or near-stilleto heels. And then her make-up was a little on the Goth side, I thought. Deep purples and blacks, with black hair. Looked like she could change three items of clothing, pick up some leather, and be full on dom!

   I never set a time line on the events I threw together in that stream of consciousness.
   The only time I established was that I was in the US in the sixties when I heard and saw the TV shows and lectures I alluded to, and marched in the anti war protests I allude to, and of course I have been returning to the US at regular intervals ever since. I dashed that off in a few minutes at the key board. I was not writing a history for sociology 201.
   I chose the Thriller in Manila to link to globalisation because if memory serves me right that was the first fight beamed round the world by satellite – the joint invention of King and Ali which transformed sport for ever.
   Serum, you read more into my musings than I ever intended. I don't know if you ever saw any of the Black Muslims (or members of the Nation of Islam) but Obama simply looks very like them in his immaculate middle class dress and confident stance. I was a member of the Oakland Project in the UC Berkeley School of Public Policy in the late sixties and met and talked with many members of the new black movements such as the Black Panthers. Of course Ali was criticized for his conversion but it soon was accepted and people who first struggled not to say Cassius Clay soon got used to it. When Cat Stevens converted I suspect he was disappointed by the lack of angst.
   All I am saying is that many members of my generation in the US must make a visual link between Obama and the Nation of Islam simply because of his dress and demeanour – and of course his oratory. My God they could do the oratory bit.
   Better than Obama actually because he is a walking collection of cliches. The “fear” I wonder about is the fear of assassination – visually triggered by the image of Obama/Malcolm X.
   Some of those thoughts were triggered by the news that Condi had invited a top fashion designer to her suite to do some serious shopping.
   People tend to under-estimate the aesthetic content of the Black Power movement.
   I remember thinking that one of the biggest shocks the white US middle class ever got was the launch of Ebony magazine. What ever happened to Aunt Jemima?
   I remember talking to a young black woman scholar in the Oakland Project office. She was stunning – but we were talking about travel etc and she complained she could not afford to fly to Europe. I asked her what her magnificent leather full length coat had cost (let alone the leather boots). She told me – and I pointed out she could have flown to Europe and back twice for that price.
   They were exciting times in more ways than one.
   Anyhow, go to Wikipedia and look up Malcolm X and ask yourself – who does he remind you of?

   I should say too that I know that Ebony had been around for yonks ( I think it started just after WWII) – as a kind of black underground but high quality magazine – but surfaced in the public mainstream American mind at around the time of the Black is Beautiful movement.
   These times were weaving a new pattern and the warps and the wefts were complex and ever changing.
