Can anyone recommend a good site showing practical self defense?

...and by that I mean I don't want to become a black belter since I do not have the time to train extensively. Right now I only need to master a few moves that may come in handy someday, like what is the best maneuver when a guy throws a punch, something like that.

On the other hand, I'm kinda curious about learning Bruce Lee's style. Jeet Kun Do, is it? Any site that teaches it?

So look, I am going to give you a break here since you will be bombarded by people who won't be so political.

There are websites, DVDs, and a myriad of other places that offer what you are asking for, because they know you are dumb enough to buy it. Why in the world of fighting and self defense do people think that a few moves here and there are going to actually help I have no idea.

Do you think you could say fly a plane by what you learn online? That you could read a website, maybe a book or two, jump right in the cockpit of a plane, take off, fly, and land a plane with no formal instruction?

Do you think that you could drive a car specifically with information learned online, that you get the basic idea, and then are thrown directly into rush hour in L.A. or on the Autobahn and would do ok?

Let's get even more basic...

What about learning to play basketball. Do you think you could learn everything on how to shoot a jumper, practice a few things on your own, and could then jump right into a game and do well?

How about baseball? Learn online how to swing, how to grip, where to stand. Again, no formal instruction you just then step into a baseball game and hit a fastball thrown at you.

It is sort of the same way with fighting or self defense. In fact, the best "self defense" can't be taught period, because it is about having a good head on your shoulders, avoiding trouble, and being able to think quick on your feet and get yourself out of trouble without violence. The best self defense is just being smart.

You can't master a single move without a real instructor teaching it to you, and then testing it repeatedly. First because every thing has nuances, and without someone telling you what you are doing wrong it and how to correct it, you will never get better.

Even in your above scenario "what is the best manuever when someone throws a punch" has a ton of answers.. what type of punch, where is it coming from, is the guy taller than you, shorter than you.. all have different things, some punches you slip, some you can simply avoid. Others it might depend on what you want to do afterwards. If a guy is taller, chances are I am going to slip (combination of parrying and ducking) and get inside of him. If a guy is shorter, I might just parry and circle outside him. There is a lot to it really, even learning a few moves doesn't mean you will know how to do them.

I could give you a dozen moves and have you practice them over and over again. However, if you have never done it repeatedly against a guy really trying to punch you, it is worthless. Also when the adrenaline hits, your BPM goes through the roof, your vision tunnels, and your breathing gets shallow, nothing I have told or shown you previously is going to matter, only what instincts dictate from that point, in fact cognitive function is decreased tremendously during that time frame as everything is concentrated on your instinctual reaction, you won't even be able to think about doing a move.

Without real speed and intensity sparring, you will have no idea the timing needed to pull off the move. I mean there is a lot to it.

You seem to want a short cut.

If that is the case, buy a gun, a knife, get a conceal and carry permit, invest in some courses on stress shooting, flash sight picturing, and spend an hour or so a week at the range. In 2 or 3 months you can be downright street lethal, no black belt required. The coursework for the conceal and carry permit usually includes a pretty in depth thing on where and when you can carry and use lethal force. Then you will at least feel a little safer and still have your shortcut means of defending yourself.

Hand to hand fighting, takes a lot of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears to get good at, belay that.. to get remotely competent at. And there are highly trained black belts who get shot, stabbed, and otherwise killed despite all that training.

For that matter, there are highly trained, elite level shooters who get killed by random untrained civilians.

All training does is help put the odds in your favor. The odds heavily point that you will never need self defense skills at all.

If you are curious about Bruce Lee's Style you should learn it is more of an approach, of learning as much as you can and using what works for you. He believed in hard sparring, extensive conditioning, and cross training to develop what works best for you. No rigid form, no preset notions. There are also few people who were truly given his permission to teach it, and they have evolved it. Dan Inosanto is the most primary one and his Jeet Kune Do, or his style is completely different and evolved to include Filipino arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo, as well as other things.There is no site that teaches it, because while it has some common techniques, many of it is evolved into what works for you and that is done by using it in hard sparring, training in an alive context, and learning va
