Mma Boxing Speed Boxing for MMA, how do you need to change your style?
I have a background in boxing but I was thinking of how you would have to adapt boxing to make it work in MMA. I'm thinking Boxing vs. good ground fighters. Some of the key ideas I have are the following:
1) Always think about level. You never want to be high and your opponent low. This would allow him to shoot in easy.
2) Always keep your opponents head to one side of your body. Never let him stand right in front of you.
3) Punch with speed and don't fully sitdown on punches unless you have him hurt. Keep you balance always while punching.
What do you think of those ideas? what else would you add?
Darb you are over simplifying. I've seen many great strikers take out grapplers before the fight ever hit the ground. I don understand the need for cross training but my question is how to use boxing effectively in MMA
Darb D makes some good points. But to a certain degree I think missed the point of your question. First thig you will change is your stance. Stand in more of a Mauy Thai/Kickoxing stance. So you can check kicks and be in a position to more easily sprawl in the event of a take down attempt. Second is that you cant throw your punches in a traditional boxing manner. MMA guys tend to throw wider to keep some distance between themselves and their opponants. So uppercuts arent really all that wise unless you are in the clinch. And an MMA coach will let you know if and when you should throw it. But to simply simplify the answer instead of a long winded monlogue. Change your stance and start from scratch. Try to avoid letting your boxing instincts from kicking in. Have a MMA trainer teach you from the ground up. And as you train you will see where the boxing comes into play and how it applies. You will need to psycholigically seperate the two. It is difficult, but can be done. I train in Boxing and Muay Thai. And though you throw punches in both, its a diiferent technique. I was able to seperate the two by simply associating something simple to what I was practicing. I just made a conscience distinction to seperate the two. When Im wearing shoes I box, and when I am bare footed Im doing Muay Thai. And Ive noticed that when I approach the the heavy bag. Im naturally in the fighting stance depending on whats on, or not on my feet. I dont have to even think about it. Its just second nature. It may sound silly but it worked for me. So I recomend you approach MMA like you know nothing. And take in the techniques as they apply to MMA.

Am I too old to start boxing?
I'm 17, 6'1", 250lbs.
I've always been a fan of boxing, and about 3 years ago became a fan of MMA.
I want to start boxing and maybe go pro, but I'm curious to whether or not I'm too old to start boxing. I know a lot of the great boxers started when they were very young.
Muhammad Ali started when he was 12.
Mike Tyson started when he was 13.
I run every day, I lift weights.
I own a heavy bag and speed bag.
But I'd like some input to see if i can start boxing and possibly go pro.
There is a really good Gym near by which is Certified by USA Boxing.
While the odds are stacked against you when compared to those that started when they were pre teen. However, you can overcome these odds with natural athletic ability, a strong chin piece, and a work ethic compared to none.
Kermit Cintron did not start until he was 19, and his only two losses have asteriks next to them. He is definitely a top ten welterweight/jr. middleweight now. I think he will be the man to beat paul williams personally.
There are many other boxers that started about you're age, or later are found great success.
But if you have low bodyfat percentage, it sounds like you definitely got the athletic/ genetic potential to be a beast of a heavyweight. A little short, but if you're quick then it won't matter.
Just find a local boxing gym and start training. AVOID "McGyms" like YMCA, and other chain/corporate franchise gyms that have a boxing program. These tend to be for those inclined to suck. You want to find a REAL boxing gym with that old school, vintage feel. No fancy carpeting, or shiny hard wood floors... no gay, trendy music blaring in the background. The only sound you want to hear is the "pops" from shoe shining and the rattles of speed bags. The head trainer of the gym should be a real grumpy, fiery old guy with grey hair. He should always have a grimace on his face similar to Clint Eastwood in El Torino. He should talk about old boxer from the "good ole days", and talk about guys so far back that you have never even heard of them. He should talk about "Graziano" a lot.
