Im wanting to eventually start training in mma, right now though I dont have the money and I am overweight and have been lazy as hell. Im wanting to change all that, what kinds of things can I do to start preping for the training in mma? I have inherited a tredmill, speed bag, heavy bag and stand. I was warned though that doing mma stand up on the heavy bag without proper training first can lead to learning bad habits that are harder to unlearn than it is to learn good ones. Is that true? What other kinds of things can I do to get into shape, Im going to also be doing body weight exercises and a core program.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
It can but I find this even more-so with people that have had some kind of formal training that was poor in nature. Such people usually have practiced something repeatedly and so they are particularly harder to break bad habits with. Also age and maturity have a lot to do with this and this is particularly difficult with younger students who may have started their martial arts training at some diploma mill where they excelled and now moved to a legitimate school where the standards are higher. At the same time some things are not bad habits but rather just a difference in training and what a particular martial art stresses or teaches. When that person goes to something else they then still carry some of that which they have been practicing to their new interest and there is a difference in regards to some things. I would go ahead and proceed and start working out and when you have the money and in better shape shop around and see what types of martial arts, gyms, and schools are in your area.

What system of grappling would be best for me?
I've been taking shito-ryu karate for about 7 1/2 years and have been doing brawling (but still using karate tecniques along) on the punching bag for the striking. I use to do high school wrestling but left due to the fact I didn't feel like I was getting better. I tried Iowa style wrestling which made me alot better as a grappler but the coach moved away.
So right now I'm looking for a system of grappling in the area that I would be good with in mma, on the ground (offence and defence), standing, and in a real life situation.
I'm 5ft 7in and weigh about 165lbs. I go to the gym 4 times a week and train 3 nights of karate and train at home. I have decent speed, strength, and tecnique. I looked into judo, greco-roman, submission wrestling, sambo, bjj.
What do you recommend for grappling? All answers appriciated thank you!
Greco as you probably found out is really good for your upper body take-downs. A.K.A slams. For the best ground control to pound your opponent and move him in a fight is wrestling. I recommend BJJ instead of just submission wrestling. In BJJ you will learn sweeps which help you defensively to change from bottom position to a reversal to top position, while learning a vast amount of submissions.
