If these Legends of Marital Arts/Combat Sports fought in modern-day MMA how would they do?
If these following legends were allowed to fight in modern-day MMA how well do you think they would do? The MMA rules would be the UFC rules, 3 rounds, 5 minutes, fought in the octagon, gloves, etc...
AND they had one year to crosstrain in any martial art/combat sports they need to be more well-rounded.
The Legends:
#1. Muhammad Ali. Boxer. Considered one of the greates heavyweight boxers ever.
#2. Mas Oyama. Kyokushin Karate. Founder.
#3. Masahiko Kimura. Judo. Considered the greatest Judoka of all time. Fought Helio Gracie in Vale Tudo.
#4. Steven Segal. Aikido. 7th dan Aikidoka. Action movie actor.
#5. The Rock. Professional Wrestling. One of the best pro-wrestlers ever.
1) Probably not well. A year isn't enough time to prepare him to deal with leg kicks, clinch fighting, or any sort of grappling. Anyone stupid enough to stand and trade with him would get knocked out, and in a cage he'd be difficult to catch, but the moment anyone did anything other than throw punches at him, he'd be doomed.
2) A little better than Ali due to having more tools in his arsenal. We'd basically be seeing a similar type of fighter to any Muay Thai or K-1 style champ entering MMA. He might rise to the top like Crocop or, like Malaipet, not do so well. Considering he was also a black belt in Judo and not unfamiliar with the ground game, I suggest he'd do better than average.
3) Really, the greatest Judoka of all time? Perhaps of his generation. Again, looking at other Judoka, everyone from Fedor to Karo to Sokoudjou to Nakamura to Yoshida to Akiyama, I think it's safe to say that he'd do pretty well, even with only a year of cross-training. Probably be a contender in a short period of time. Maybe not a champ, though.
4) All the stories I've heard about Seagal basically involve him tossing around guys who couldn't fight back or being so full of himself that he looked like an ass. Gene Lebell choked him out because his defense was supposed to be "chi control" or something equally idiotic. I humbly suggest he'd get smashed.
5) The Rock was only "one of the best" in the sense that he had great charisma and put butts in the seats. He wasn't exactly known as being a worker or shooter. Even among his contemporaries, Kurt Angle, Dean Malenko, Brett Hart, or Chris Benoit would have much better chances of succeeding in MMA. Given the fact that he had no amateur wrestling background, no legit fighting background, and no martial arts training whatsoever, he'd be relying more on his athleticism than skill, and that could only take him so far. The people who identify guys like Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, Brock Lesnar, and Bobby Lashley as "pro wrestlers" tend to be ignorant of their amateur backgrounds. Severn won a number of titles in many different grappling styles; Shamrock went to the Olympic trials and was heavily trained in submission holds; Lesnar was NCAA champ; Lashley was Armed Forces champ along with other titles. Comparing the Rock to them is unfair to Dwayne Johnson, as he's nowhere near their league in terms of actual wrestling skill.
