Molded Foam
can i use spray foam to make a mold?
I made an object out of clay and I want to make it in plaster next, but I need to make a mold for the plaster. I was wondering if the spray foam used to insulate cracks would work. If it wont what will?
I don't know about the piece you made but you can make walls of clay to hold the plaster. Care needs to be taken so the walls don't give way during the pour. If that happens you will have plaster flowing out on your work area..
It is possible to make multiple piece molds creating barriers between the pours with clay.
The only caution is not to use any clay used for the mold in a way that would be fired in a kiln. Any plaster contamination can cause trouble at the high heat in the kiln.
EDIT:Another material you can use is Silicone caulking. Make thin layers letting it set between.. If you are near a distributor or willing to order on line look at some of the smooth-on products

Be aware,Even minor damage to a bumper can be worse than it looks. Usually, these things are filled with specially molded foam. One dent changes the shape of the foam and can actually degrade the shock-absorbtion qualities of the bumper by quite a lot.You know how you're supposed to throw a bike helmet in the garbage if you ever take a hard blow with it? If you take another hit with a damaged helmet, it could split in half or something. Same concept with car bumpers.I'd get an auto mechanic to do an estimate.Seth R.
