Muhammad Ali had two careers, pre-suspension and post-suspension.
Before his suspension, Ali was unbeatable. Afterwards, he was a much better-than-average fighter, but he was no longer the same Ali.
Ali was suspended for three years after he was convicted of draft evasion. Finally, the Supreme Court overturned his conviction. Three years is a lifetime for a fighter in his prime. But Ali came back and beat some of the best fighters of his era, including Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and George Foreman.
I think Ali was a great fighter, but I admire him most for standing on his principles and refusing to be drafted. The SC ruled that he was a minister of the Nation of Islam. So he lost three of his prime years and millions of dollars because he stayed true to his principles.
Ali may or may not have been the greatest boxer of all time, but he gave new meaning to the word “Champion.” That he was.
