Why is it that all olympic sports allow professional athletes except boxing?

"As of 2004, the only sports in which no professionals compete is boxing" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Games#Amateurism_and_professionalism
http://sports.inquirer.net/inquirersports/inquirersports/view/20080816-155003/Why-Pacquiao-cant-give-Philippines-an-Olympic-gold --- I found the answer in this link

Amateur fights are four-rounders and safety is the premium consideration. It’s about winning bouts on points by making clear hits and not knockouts. Remember also that amateurs wear protective helmets to absorb the power of head blows.”

This answer still doesn't satisfy me though.

Is it really because professionals CANNOT adjust an amateur environment because of the change of rules???

If you look at basketball ... olympic rules are different from NBA but professional athletes can still compete in the olympic games.

.---. This is a mind boogler.

The reason being is that it is a different sport. The boxing in the olympics is quite strict. Firstly the head gear, then secondly its the 4 x 2 minute rounds and the scoring system is different.

In professional boxing its 10 and 12 rounds and I think the round are 3 minutes, maybe more??

So it's not the same and it would be difficult for a pro to adapt to the amatuer sport. Mostly it goes the other way. Most of the pros are ex olympians/ amateurs.

Ali (2001) - Boxing DVD In 1964 a brash new pro boxer fresh from his olympic gold medal victory explodes on to the scene Cassius Clay. Bold and outspoken he cuts an entirely new image for African American's in sport with his proud public self confidence with his unapologetic belief that he is the greatest boxer of all time. To his credit he sets out to prove that with his highly agile and forceful style soon making him a formidable boxer who soon claims the heavyweight championship. His personal life is no less noteworthy with his allegiance to the Nation of Islam his friendship with the controversial Malcolm X and his abandonment of his slave name in favour of Muhammad Ali stirring up controversy. Yet at the top of his game both Ali's personal and professional lives face the ultimate test with the military draft rules are changed making him eligible for military induction during the Vietnam War. Despite the fact that he could easily agree to a sweetheart deal that would have meant an easy tour of duty for himself Ali refuses to submit on principle to cooperate in an unjust war for a racist nation that treated his people so poorly. The cost of that stand is high as he finds himself unable to legally box in his own country while his case is contested in court. What follows is a battle for a man who would sacrifice so much for what he believes in and a comeback that would cement his legend as one of the great sports figures of all time.

If professional boxing is ridden with dirty athletes (and criminals)-- why not just ban professional boxing?

cheaters will always find ways to cheat.

and boxing has had a long history of corrupt bureaucracy and it has criminals posing as athletes.

plus, it is a sport that has an objective to make the opponent unconscious. it's violent. as violent as actually seeing blood and open wounds during the competition.

why the pretenses of wanting to make the boxers "clean"-- the regulations are good enough and are improving for such a crude sport.

do you want gladiators to have a manicure as well?

professional boxing is not the olympics.
ric,

i used the logic "and" not "or"-- that means, i enumerated reasons that go together... do you get it?

Banning boxing has already been tried multiple times and is still ongoing. With that being said, it has been reduced from 15 to 12 rounds to accomodate the lower endurenced Asians. Now it should be strictly tested for drugs to protect the CLEAN boxers. Virtually all the greatest boxers were first CLEAN olympic medalist. 3 in a row were Clay, Frazier, Foreman. each one did not get hurt feelings from drug tests.
