Open Gloves Mitts
Where can I find a free pattern for 18th Cent. mitts?
I'm willing to do simple drafting or scaling up. I can't find anything on the net so far and figure the more people looking, the better the turn up.
The mitts are gloves with a fingerless tube for the thumb and an open pointed cover for the rest of the fingers. I'm looking for at least elbow length. Any help is appreciated.
I don't know if you can find a free pattern for mitts. Kannik's Korner does have an accessories pattern that includes mitts(http://www.kannikskorner.com/pataccess.htm, and scroll down a bit), but it's $10 dollars.
Honestly, I don't think it should be that difficult to just do it yourself. Cut on the bias for the appropriate stretch, and trace your own arm to get the approximate width (with seam allowance, of course, and leaving it wide enough to fit your whole hand through), and draw the shape you want over the hand. Hem the edges and stitch.

How should I break in my new first basemans mitt?
I used shaving cream and I also wrapped up my old glove, which worked great, but I am open to hear any suggestions
3 things to do
1. buy a glove softener. It is a foam type substance that you put on your glove and heat in the oven. It helps soften the leather without wearing it out
2. Play lots of catch
3. Take a piece of wood about an inch thick all around. Then take some hockey tape or some kind of sturdy tape and wrap it around the wood. At the end of one side make a circle about the size of a baseball. Then take the piece and grabbing the end without the knob, hit the knob repeatedly into the parts of the glove you want to break in.
