how do you install rear brake pads on a 2005 ford focus?
Ahhh! The good old drum brakes! After taking the wheel off obviously you see the cover. Step 1. Make sure the parking brake is not engaged! Very important. Now this part will just take raw muscle. Get a decent size hammer and knock the cover off. Be carefull not to whack the wheel studs, as you could break them. The best way I've found to do this is give a couple good taps in the front and then a couple from the rear. It will be on very tight so don't be afraid. Once you get it off, the real fun begins. I would recommend taking both off at the same time. So jack up the entire rear end of your car. **DO NOT TAKE BOTH SIDES APART, BUT TAKE BOTH COVERS OFF, so you can see the brake pads and other parts. Now you'll notice that there are a few srpings holding the pads in place. You need to remove these springs (this can be tricky) and then the whole assembly will basically come apart easily for you. This is where it is important to have access to the other side. Use the other side as a reference point when you put everything back together. I'll warn you ahead of time, some of the springs holding the pads in place are very tightly wound. Meaning it takes ALOT of force to stretch them back into place properly. Some car manufactures even make a special tool to help with this. If this is your first time, you might want to consider having a knowledgable person with you, if you know one. If not, take a stab at it. It will be challenging for a beginner, but not impossible. Good Luck.

In Sendo Kung-Fu, I used to do a lot of striking in pads/focus mits. In Cerio's Kenpo, we do mostly no-contact (in the air) strikes. My conclusions are that no-contact striking develops better control/balance and proper technique versus pad striking will develop more power in your strikes and a better feeling of the strike.
By proper technique, I mean that since you strike in the air, the instructor has a better view of your strike and can correct it if needed. By balance, I mean that kicking in the air requires more balance than kicking in a pad (I had to find out the hard way).
IMO, the best method is a mix of both. Beginners should do more off-pad work so that they focus mainly on technique instead of focusing on how hard their hitting the pad.
