One foot glide tips please?
Hi
I'm having a bit of trouble with one foot glides I go off to the side to much and then when I do a one foot glide, I can only hold it for about 2 seconds. Please tell me if you have any tips or ANYTHING that will help me! I can not do one foot glides and I bugs me when I see little kids doing it eventhough I can't!
BTW I'm 13 in basic 1 (pre alpha). I have only been ice skating 3 times so far and I can do front and back swizzles. Rocking horse. Curves. Stroking. Dip. Kinda snowplow stop. Glide. But I cany do 1 foot glides:( I'm taking group lessons
Also how Long do you think it will take me to complete all the basic levels 1-8. After I complete 1-8 should I get. A private coach? ( I don't want to go to the olympics but maybe small fink competions!)
No one can predict the future and say you'll complete Basic 1-8 in x amount of time. Everyone progresses at their own rate based on how seriously they take their lessons and practices. Private lessons will ALWAYS help a skater progress faster.
Basic 1 and Pre-Alpha are two different things. If you're in Basic 1, you don't need to learn one-foot glides yet. In Pre-Alpha, you do, which is the toughest maneuver on the test.
The one-foot glide wanders because you're letting your foot lean to one side or another.
Bend your knees and shift your weight to the skating foot. Keep your chin over that foot and your arms on each side. Then, just lift your knee in front of you, as if you were going to touch your lifted toe to the side of your skating foot near the instep.
Look forward (best to do this on a hockey line) and pick a target to look at that's straight ahead.
Straighten your spine - no slouching - but keep your knee bent as you balance.
Balancing on one foot off ice (barefoot/sneakers is fine) helps tremendously. If it seems too easy, do it with your eyes closed.

Literacy Coaching: Learning to Collaborate $23.99 Literacy coaches, learn to transform every interaction with teachers and students into an opportunity for learning!Renowned author Barbara Walker takes a positive approach to literacy coaching and explores the possibilities for teacher development and student learning in her newest book, Literacy Coaching: Learning to Collaborate. Drawing from her experiences working with both pre-service and practicing teachers, Walker discusses the importance of learning to collaborate within the school and during classroom interactions in order to increase both teacher- and student-learning. She presents literacy coaches and teachers with a step-by-step process, the "cycle of literacy coaching" for adapting classrooom instruction and outlines best practice strategies for implementation, including the multiple decisions that teachers make before, during, and after a literacy lesson. The cycle is broken down into three steps for ease of use: The pre-conference--teachers and coaches decide on the instructional procedures, which student to observe, the coaching procedures, what aspects of literacy to observe, and what student work to collect. Implementation--the literacy coach observes the teacher and the students. The post-conference--the literacy coach and the teacher reflect on the lesson and analyze what they observed. This analysis and the interpretation of the classroom interactions is integral. Using a gradual release model, Walker explains the different levels of support that a literacy coach can use as they work with teachers. She discusses coaching through modeling, “coaching in the zone,” and coaching for independence. Finally, the step-by-step techniques provided help teachers and coaches determine at what point during the lesson instruction was modified to promote student learning. |

25 Tips and Drills for Coaching Horizontal Jumps (DVD) $39.99 With Mike Pullins,USC Assistant Track Coachfeaturing demonstrations by Jesse Williams, 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials High Jump Champ (7'7"); and Allen Simms, 6th place at the '08 Olympic Trials in the Triple JumpCoach Pullins shares his successful teaching tactics and tips in this DVD on coaching the horizontal jumps. Approach runs are a must for all jumpers and will allow the athlete to have jumping success. Pullins believes 16 to 20 steps is the aim early in the season for approach runs. He teaches to drive out on the first four steps to build speed on the approach. To develop a good approach, Pullins demonstrates a "push, pull, plant" technique that incorporates hurdles on the jump runway. First and second phase run off, standing landing drill, box step, small hop & big step, standing 4-step and the first & second phase long jump are all good drills for pre-season workouts. Each drill is slightly different and has a special skill focus. Advanced drills for experienced jumpers include single leg projection hops, step drill, straight line paw repeat, paw read push drill, alternating step, single leg hop and the strong/weak drills. Rhythm is crucial to the jump events and improvement comes from the rhythm run off drill. The walking extension drill uses hurdles and enhances flexibility, posture and a straight line push. As a bonus, Pullins demonstrates 22 additional drills using med balls, resistance bands, jump pads, boxes and hurdles to create the desired effect. The emphasis is on addressing conditioning, flexibility and proper posturing. 69 minutes. 2007. |
