Punching Never Used
How do you use a punching bag?
I have "inherited" a 70 lb Everlast punching bag. I think I may like to add it to my workout, however, I've never used one before.
I can just tell, just by punching it a couple of times, that I could hurt myself if I don't use it correctly.
I don't want the expense of a boxing coach, because I don't plan to take up boxing!!! But how do I go about learning to properly use this thing?
I would work into it gradually. You can start by just pushing it - one hand, the other, both hands. Try pushing it as far as you can. That you you will build up the muscle in your arms (back and shoulders too) so that when you do start "punching" it, you'll have a good muscular support system in place. You may also want to try using some weights on your wrists to condition them before you start punching. Your wrists (hands and fingers also) are going to take some pretty serious impacts so get them in shape.
I've never used a punching bag either, but what I've suggested seems to make sense to me. You really should get pro advice, though, to be sure.
