How do you train when your not part of the academy?

So i been invloved with Barazilian Jiu Jitsu for about 2 yrs now.. I love the sport, i think about it all the time.. But recently, because of money issues I had to give it up for a almost 1/2 a yr (heres hoping its sooner than that). In the mean time, I'm trying to find people who want to train on the side (If your in NE or NW Houston hit me up), but havent had any luck... Im getting into a grappling circuit training regime i saw Randy Couture do, and i modified it a little more. Im trying to use a stability ball, and pretend its an opponent and practice postioning and my fluditity on it. Of course ive been reading my Saulo Riberio and Rodrigo Gracie book and looking at videos online. IS there anything else i could do.

Im trying to work my striking as well, and I eventually want to get an MMA fight in a yr or 2..so anything you could suggest would be appreciated

Find academies in your area that offer true open mat: where you can go in on a day [usually SAT or SUN] and train free of charge or affiliation.

Find other athletes that wish to do free rolls or have them organised already: where fighters from different affiliations seek to train at homes or other non-affiliated spaces [military base gyms/rec centres/et ctera.

Train a lot. Compete.

College Graduation Gift Ideas, Pretty pretty please =)?

My best guy friend is graduating college in December. I want to get something and I'm totally lost on what to get him. For the past 3 years he's been showering me with presents and I never gave him anything simply cause I never knew what to get. And he's really well off so he kinda already has everything.

Here's some of the things he's interested in:
-UFC (I know Randy Couture is one of his fave's, not sure about absolute fave fighter)
-Star Trek
-Comics
-WarHammer
-Writing (he wants to become a writer)
-Counter Strike
-Space
-Philosophy
-Music( Mostly old school - Jimi Hendrix, nirvana, pearl jam...)
-Anime( All I know is Bleach)
-Please suggest something other than money =)
He's graduating from Finance, but he hates it. He only did it because he has to handle the family business.

Also, he's not working anytime soon. Planning on getting his masters

Can you get him tickets to see a live UFC fight?? Hopefully Chuck Liddell is his favorite =)
You could get him a really nice journal to write some thoughts or stories in.
Are there any space museums where you live? I know it sounds lame but if its what hes interested in...

Dana WANTS Fedor! how can anyone argue that? Fedor is one of the biggest names in MMA! the only reason why people dont know the name FEDOR EMELIANENKO is because he is not in the UFC and he wasnt 3x's heavyweight champ and 2x's light heavyweight champ…like Randy Couture! But people have to realize that Couture was champ so many times because he lost the title many times or decided to go to different organizations where he would get beat! Emelianenko has won 2 heavyweight tournaments, 1 open weight tournament, and has won the PRIDE heavyweight title (with out losing it once) and has yet to be beat “fair and square!” Plus, fedor has won many sambo and judo tournaments! He has beat every kind of fighter: wrestlers, judo (olympic) medalists, jiu jitsu legends, kickboxers, gigantic freaks and anything thats been thrown at him!

This has to be one of the gayest posts I've ever read. “From the standpoint of physical conditioning I owe a lot of it to Randy Couture. I keep a picture of Couture on the wall of my office and when I'm feeling lazy in the morning it just takes a nasty look from the fighter they call “Captain America” to get my ass out of bed and on my way to the gym”Jesus, did Couture buy you dinner before you blew him? Isn't there a Streisand concert you're missing?Anonymous!

I don't disagree at all that muscular endurance training is overrated, and pretty much downright useless, for a football player. And the issue of possible injury is absolutely a concern. But again, my point was simply that, MMA training for these guys, particularly if we are talking about sparring and drilling, is nothing more than GPP. Something that will increase their work capacity, and recovery abilities, down the line. I'm not arguing that it should be done in-season, or pre-season, or heck even in the summer. But I think as something during the spring it wouldn't be detrimental to them. I also agree with your idea of mental toughness, basically, if they are playing in the NFL, they probably have the requisite mental toughness, but I think that is an assumption and not necessarily a fact. I remember Jay Glazer talking about the maturation that Matt Leinart went through after training with himself and Randy Couture one off-season. Granted, that very well may have been more due to mental training and off the mat stuff that they did with him. But I think it has more benefits than it's being given credit for.
