Red Everlast How long ago did boxing gloves become red?
I'm asking this because I have a vintage pair of red Everlast gloves that I got at an antique store, and I'm trying to figure out approximately how old they could be. They seem to be professional grade because they're laced and don't look like the kind of gloves you'd by at a regular sports store.
FLores and Frager had red gloves in the late 50's while Everlast continued using their wine color pro gloves until the early 70's. Red became a standard color choice about 1975 for Everlast. Seyer/Reyes had red gloves in the late 60's.
Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Gene Fulmer used red Frager gloves in their 50's bout in Chicago. Ali vs. Quarry used red Seyer gloves in their 1970 bout. Prior to that the standard color for fight gloves was the very dark ox blood or better known as wine color. Training gloves were both wine or black. I bought a pair of 16 oz. Seyer/Reyes, red training gloves in 1972.
