KRISTEN STEWART BAFTA AWARDS 2010 WINS ORANGE RISING STAR AWARD TWILIGHT NEW MOON ECLIPSE
Whos was the greatest war time president of the 20th century? Your thoughts?
I believe no doubt about it FDR because the Germans surrendered the week of his death and when Truman became President the blue prints to defeat the Japanese were already developed for Truman.... Truman just needed to be briefed by FDR's staff on what to do. When the media wanted to kick General Patton out, FDR gave him another star. He was a motivational President in a time of war and he let the generals do there job. People that say Reagon..... Regan wasn't a real wartime president. The Soviet unions demise had more to do with internal politics, corruption, people rising up, many factors. Regan had little to do with it. JFK all the way to Ronald Regan were cold war predients... ... Matter of fact Regan said FDR was his favorite president of all times..... People that say Truman, everything Truman did was already set in stone all he needed to do was sign the order. Woodrow Wilson was a classic war time president, so was George H. Bush
I lean towards Truman just because he really was one of the few Presidents we've had who was actually more concerned with running the country than playing politics. Not to belittle FDR, who was motivational, hard working, and drove a hard bargain, but he really wanted to be a king: he didn't let anyone else in on what was going on, which created a huge problem when he died and the new President had been in the dark about the development of the atomic bomb (and possibly about secret dealings between Roosevelt and Stalin). I think that Truman was a great WWII President--unlike FDR, he had the instincts to know that Stalin could not be trusted, and he had the courage and the gumption to make decisions and stand by them. Plus he was a firm hand in the Korean War.
When it comes to the Cold War President, I'd like to present the case for Richard Nixon. True, he didn't preside over anything as stunning as the arms race, and Vietnam wasn't a victory (although we can blame Johnson just as much for that mess), but diplomatically I think he was one of the best Presidents of the twentieth century. He commanded the respect of both Brezhnev and Mao, and he was able to pit the two Communist powers against each other, rather than their uniting against the US.
As for Wilson, he was unable to balance idealism with realism. He was a minority President--Taft and T. Roosevelt had, combined, received more votes than he had back in 1912--who overestimated his support at home when he left for the Paris peace talks. He was too stubborn and didn't have enough support either domestically or internationally.
...so yeah, I'm going with Truman, possibly my favorite President of the century, with all due respect to FDR and Nixon.
