Roy Jones Jr on "LIITR" : "My only bad blood is I want to see him (Bernard) bleed"
Which all-time great fighters could have hung with the Primed Roy Jones?
From 147 lbs up to and including 190 lbs, what fighters from the history of boxing could have hung in there with the primed Roy Jones?
BQ: Who was the lightest fighter that would have had a reasonable chance of beating him?
Unless you have stood ringside and seen some of history's all time greats at their best, then stood ringside and seen Roy at his peak, you will not understand what I am about to say, but nobody in history, before or since was anywhere near as fast or as quick as Roy Jones Jr. Obviously, if a heavy puncher nailed Roy, Jones would, (like anyone else) get knocked out, but at his best he was so fast and so quick, most wouldn't have landed cleanly. James Toney or Bernard Hopkins (at their peaks) couldn't do it, and they are in my opinion far superior to Joe Calzaghe, Glen Johnson or Antonino Tarver who beat the old, faded shell of what Roy Jones once was.
Hard punching light heavyweight greats like Archie Moore, Michael Moorer and Bob Foster have a punchers chance of catching lightning in a bottle, but it would have to be a lucky punch like Traver's, and very unlikely. 175 lb. Greats like Billy Conn or Joey Maxim have no chance at all, Jones would have easily beat them.
Super Middleweights like Calzaghe, Benn or Michalczewski wouldn't even come close to a prime Jones, and Calzaghe would have the least chance of the three, at least Benn and Michalczewski had legit 168 lb. KO power, but I seriously doubt they had the skill to land a solid shot on a peak Jones. Few American super middleweights that I can think of would have given Jones trouble.
At 160 lbs Sugar Ray Robinson might have had a chance, but he would have been hard pressed to land a hard enough shot to stop Jones, and the odds of even Robinson winning a decision were at best even money, Jone's speed and quickness were that dominate. The best Middleweights in history like Hagler, Monzon, Burley or Cerdan didn't have the speed to match Jones, and again only a lucky KO would do it, they wouldn't have been able to out point Roy.
Junior middleweights like John Mugambi or Gerald McClellan had enough power, but as you go down in weight, Roy's chin would improve, so again it is unlikely at best that they would have done it.
At welterweight you have three that might have had a shot, Henry Armstrong, Ray Leonard or Thomas Hearns. Armstrong on grit alone would have given Roy a run for his money, and the KO power of Thomas Hearns was possibly the best the 147 lb. division ever seen. Ray Leonard, in my opinion would have been the least threat to Jones of the three, but Leonard, for all my criticism of him was gifted, and Ray had a way of rising to levels no one believed he could.
I must tell you, I seen a lot of fighters over the years, neither I, nor anyone I have spoken to in the business who saw Roy at his best has ever seen anything like him, even Ray Leonard told me he hadn't seen speed or quickness like Roy's. Ray and I were both ringside for Jones/Toney and we discussed what we had just seen and both of us were amazed. I don't think guys like Pernell Whitaker, Joe Gans or Roberto Duran could have taken Roy's power, as great as they were, they started out as lightweights.
Any named above had a reasonable chance at a KO, but in truth, not ever the great Sugar Ray Robinson would have been able to decision a peak Roy Jones Jr., you cannot win a boxing match if your punches don't land on your opponent. I know how this sounds, but the Roy Jones Jr. that beat Toney and Hopkins was all but unbeatable, he was just too fast to stop, and too quick to counter.

-Miguel Cotto never backed down from a relentless Shane Mosley and won a unanimous decision Saturday night, retaining his WBA welterweight title. So what's next for the unbeaten Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs)? Cotto said he would next want to face either the winner of the December 8 meeting in Las Vegas WBC welterweight champion Mayweather, undisputed light-welterweight champion Hatton or Oscar De La Hoya. Cotto said, however, that newly crowned WBO Intercontinental welterweight champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico would have to wait for his chance to fight the WBA champion. Meanwhile, Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) said he will watch the tape of the fight before he decides on his next move.
-Big News: Felix Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr., two of modern boxing's greatest exponents, will face each other in the ring at Madison Square Garden on January 19, the fighters and promoter Don King announced Saturday.
-In case you missed it, Fedor Emelianenko won the open-weight division of the 31st Combat Sambo World Championship on Nov. 10 in Prague. With the win, the 31-year-old Russian, widely regarded as the No. 1 heavyweight fighter in the world, defended the title he won two years ago in the Czech Republic capital.
-At the Elite XC event on Saturday, Kimbo Slice made short work of Bo Cantrell with a referee stoppage just 19 seconds into Round 1.
-Next week, us fight fans will be treated to UFC 78, with Rashad Evans vs. Michael Bisping serving as the Main Event.
