Semi Contact Karate
Semi Contact Karate
What is the best martial art between kung fu, karate and kickboxing?

I have done all of these systems and have my own views, but I'd love to hear what others have to say. Is shaolin superior to shotokan, is wado better than muay thai, is semi free sparring equal to full contact, is cage fighting the ultimate test or the ultimate insanity?

Katana 17 and Mushin's answers mirror my own as I've answered this type of question so many times in the last 15mths,its now becoming boring as I've had to reinstate my account twice and my last answer is the same for this one...

None! They are all useful

Its what you can adapt to and use.

The man makes the style not the style the man.

All are tools to be used.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Full contact karate is a wide term used to differentiate between competition formats of karate where competitors spar (also called Kumite) fullcontact and allow knockout as winning criterion, and those competitions that use light contact/semi contact point sparring where a knockout is regarded as a foul. The term is also by extension used to differentiate between schools/styles of karate dedicated to such full contact competitions, and schools/styles that are not. Full contact karate competition comes in several, and sometimes very different, formats. These different sport rule format have different history and was developed for the art of karate at different times in different places. Some developed independently, others developed out of other full contact rule systems or from light contact rule systems. As there are no major unifying organizations in any of the different formats, the rule details may change drastically between the many rival sport/style organizations and different promoters. Some organizations stick rigidly to one set of rules. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Mamoru Yamamoto (later called Katsuo) (b. 10 July 1938) began his formal training in the martial arts in Miyakonojo, Japan. He first studied judo, but began training in the Chitoryu style of karate under Dr. Chitose at the age of fifteen In 1959, Yamamoto and his wife Sumiko opened their first dojo in Kitakyushu, Japan in the Fujitani Judo Club. In the early 1960s, Chitose gave Yamamoto permission to start his own branch of ChitoRyu karate under the name of Yoshukan, and in 1963 Chitose changed the third kanji of their branchs name from kan meaning to stand alone to kai meaning association, indicating a potential for growth within the organization. During this early period, Yamamoto worked with Mas Oyama of Kyokushinkai Karate to develop the rules for Japanese full contact sparring to replace the sun dome tournament rule of the time. This rule meant that competitors must spar at full speed but could not make contact with one another, which made judging of fighting very subjective. Real Sport(Point) Karate Semi Contact 10 Knockout 1986 The Blitz plus

In a street fight are karate and tkd as us-less as they look and I'm told?

I train in jkd and bjj and have done for years i hear lots of people Saying how usless karate and tkd are because they are mainly semi contact. tkd is mainly kicking but that leaves you open for take downs and slips on the street which realy hurts. should they just be treated like yoga good for health and conditioning and flexability and are people deluding their selves by thinking anything else?

Sorry but I don't know any traditional artists that come from good schools that engage in street fighting. A street fight is nothing more then two ego's clashing and 99% of the time can be avoided if one person sucks it up and refuses to fight and walks away. the other 1% is self defense where there is no option but to fight.
Self defense is about survival pure and simple, not about ego. Yes there are many karate and TKD schools out there that do not teach you how to adequatly defend yourself, but there are many that still do. It is not the style that is bad or not effective, it is the teacher and how he trains his students, and the students themselves.
Traditional Okinawin karate taught correctly has knees, elbows, clinch fighting, low kicks, checking low kicks, locks, throws. chokes, not just blocks kicks and punches.
The problem is that there are too many bad schools and instructors out there that are out for a quick buck. I thin in the near future you will see a lot of MMA schools open up where the instructor is no where near qualified to teach it, because it will make money. Then in 10 years some new thing will come out and MMA's head will be put on the chopping block.

Put it this way. My style and training let me survive a knife attack from a junkie, that i still have a scar from. I survived so it can't be worthless for self defense. It also helped me overcome a substance abuse problem and enabled me to actually have a life.

I think also that you have already made up your mind, and are just looking for people to agree with you. Look at my response to this question, and it will tell you where i stand.

Chantell i also have never had a BJJ person be able to answer about multiple attackers. I respect the style, but to say it is better than any other at self defense is not true.

I await the thumb downs.
