What is a good speed/strength workout in a gym?


I just started joining a gym and i want to work on my strength and speed but i have no knowlege of whats good or not.... because im going to be on a football team next year and i have to get tougher. Basically, what i need to know is what equitment to work on for my muscle so please help.....thanks!

eat 3 meals a day do 50 pushups 25 in the morning and 25 before you go to bed and do 50 sit ups 25 in the morning and 25 before you go to bed and don't eat no candy or soda just eat eggs and drink lot of orange juice and in six monts you will have large muscle's and a six pack with out a gym it worked for me

What excises are best for improving acceleration and overall speed for 100m? That can be done in the gym?


Acceleration is all about explosiveness. Since you are talking 100m, there are many things to do i the gym that can help strengthen your core and work on an explosive start.

A lot of your power from your start is going to come from your core and through your hips. Some of the exercises you can do to include all of these areas would be squats (front, jump, and regular), deadlifts, snatch, and full cleans. These will focus greatly on your type 1 (slow twitch) muscles which has more to do with overall strength than it does with your flexibility, speed, and agility.

In order to focus on your type 2 (quick twitch) muscles, you will use no wait, yet focusing on the same areas of your body. Things you can do in the gym would include 5 minute skipping for a warmup, than move to box jumps, 180 lunge jumps, one leg pogo hops. Now I am not sure about the conditions of your gym in terms of space, but if you can solidify a space that will allow you anywhere between 15-40 meters, you can work a lot more on your starts. Exercises you can do within this space would be 10m starts and 20m starts. There are many varioations of these starts you can perform in order to get a wide range of focus. Starting from laying flat on your stomach, flat on your back, flat on stomach with feet forward, flat on back with feet forward, pushup position, etc. All of these are means in which you are forcing your body to start in a low position and works your core to a great extent in order to place yourself in a proper start position. There are also cone drills such as the 5-10-5 shuttle drill and other exercises of this nature in order to increase side to side agility.

It is important to alternate between these exercises on a daily basis (ie. day 1,3,5 = lifting, day 2,4,6 = speed and agility). If you have access to a track that gives you the possibility of sprinting out 100m than on day 6, you can use it to greatly increase your body's conditioning to that distance. What you would do on this day would be to only do 100m sprints. The manner in which you would do them would be sprint 100m, jog back to start, and sprint again. This will increase your overall conditioning and train your muscles to recover nicely.
