How Do I Stop Grinding my Teeth at Night When I Sleep?
For the past 10 years, I have been grinding my teeth in my sleep. I have really bad TMJ problems because of this, and my jaw is always in pain. I got a bite splint for $600, fitted at the dentist, but I just ended up chewing it all up while I was sleeping and now it doesn't fit anymore. I am not overly stressed out, and I don't drink much alcohol. Is there any way to stop grinding my teeth?
I am in the same boat with you. I have TMJ also. I am suppose to wear my mouth guard at night but, I am not so good about it. I wear it sometimes, then get tired of it and stop wearing it for a while.
One Dentist suggested to me that I should go and see a speech therapist so that I could retrain my tongue. He suggested that this is a learned behavior and that it could be broken, but the appropriate training had to take place.
So, I guess just like biting your nails, or cracking your knuckles this might be a habit that you have that you need to replace with a more suitable behavior.

How can I force myself to stop grinding my teeth at night on my own?
I had an expensive nightguard specially made for my mouth, but it was so uncomfortable that I couldn't sleep in it so I stopped wearing it and now I don't know where it is. I went to the dentist yesterday and found out that my teeth are totally grinded down and I *have* to wear a nightguard, but my parents will kill me if I have to get new nightguard because the old one was just made last year and was almost $700. I don't purposely grind my teeth. I didn't even know that I did it until the dentist told me last year. Is there a way I can train myself to stop?

no you really can't force yourself to stop when you're sleeping. You'd have to be awake to voluntarily stop grinding.

I am curious to know if the one he made for it does it fit over the top or fits over the lower? if it becomes uncomfortable to wear you may suggest another one made on the opposite side. Some dentists will object to this as they only want things done certain ways. But since this really is only made to protect your teeth from grinding I don't regard it as a orthotic(orthosis) device or a splint. And honestly I think $700 is a bit too much if there's not at least two followup appointments after you start wearing the "nightguard".
If you don't want your parents to find out then the cheapest way is to get one from the grocery/pharmacy. In the mean time save up money so you can get another one made at the dentist.
