Training Swivel
Whose the bigger flopper - Varejeo or Ginobli?
Is Anderson or Manu a bigger flopper. Varejeo led the league in charges and can flop on D. However, I think Ginobli is the biggest flopper in the league as he does it on offense and defense. Never seen a guy fall on his *** after shooting a shot as much as he does. His legs must go limp after taking a shot. He looked as if he was hit by a train after he shot that 3 in the 4th quarter of game 2 in the finals. In game 1 he took a charge from Lebron while double teaming with Bruce Bowen. When I ran the play back on DVR. He was actually taking steps to the side as well as bending his back to the left. His body was swiveled like an S and moving when he got hit. However, he threw his body to the ground with the gusto of a soccer player.
Ginobli is the flopping king. Varejo actually gets in front and takes the charge and sometime does a little acting. Ginobli is all acting. If you say the technical foul in game 5 of the Spurs vs, the Utah Jazz series where Ginobli ran into Fisher running up the court and flopped and got a t called on Fisher you would agree. That is all he does.

Are tv presenters trained to perform in a certain manner?
ie..look nice, smile when, and dont swing on your swivel stool sort of style.Or do they do there own thing totally.
Definitely! Presenters - no matter how talented - will undertake an often-ongoing amount of so-called media training (MT)
At the heart of MT is understanding communication (verbal and non-verbal) and includes understanding the medium of communication (TV, radio etc.) and target audience (e.g. young vs. old)
Presenters therefore will be trained to best and most effectively communicate by considering the whole range of verbal and non-verbal communication factors such as:
- Language (here I mean choice of words or "lexicon").
- Quality - Tone, Pitch, Intonation, Pace, Rythym (research shows that a slightly lower pitch & slower pace carries more authority than a quick high-pitched voice. Politicians are well-known for using "The Pause" or suddenly lowering the volume to create audience anticipation and therefore attention to what they are saying.
- Mouthing - even though you may hear, you actually lip-read too at the same time. Clear "mouthing" of words aids distinction between words and improves understanding. Try turning down the sound on the TV news and you'll see what I mean.
- Posture - presenters and producers/directors are obsessed with posture, positioning and lighting. The way an audience interprets what a presenter is trying to communicate is massively affected by the presenter's posture. A relaxed "with it" posture is good for assimilating with the audience of an MTV programme but traditionally the same approach will alienate a prime time news audience. Be aware, however, that more and more these "rules" are evolving.
- Coaching - in addition to above presenters may take acting lessons and singing lessons. Acting lessons help develop confidence or lessen self-concern. They also explore new ways of communicating the same message. Singing lessons and voice coaching allow presenters to change how they produce their voice, i.e. their breathing (using the diaphragm rather than chest muscles produces deeper breathing) and "position" of the voice (a throaty sound doesn't project as well as a "head" sound). Presenters may also take coaching in dealing with anger and frustrastion (!)
- Leaking - unconscious so called non-verbal cues or leaking of cues may be a problem for some presenters. They may blink too often or stare, twitch, rock in their chair, wring their hands, bite their lip etc etc. All these cues may point to insecurity or just be habits. However they may be distracting to audiences and TV tends to magnify the effect of the cue. Therefore presenters may undertake training or seek the help of a practitioner (e.g. hypnptherapist) to minimise or remove these cues.
- Interview Techniques - this is a big part of media training. Presenters (and others such as musicians & politicians) may undetake training in asking or handling difficult questions. Part of it comes down to the individual - how intuitively cognitively adept they are. However there are techniques. Basic ones include asking open questions (which require more than a yes/no response) or alternatively (for a presenter/interviewer) being able to ask the right question which simply can't avoid being answered directly; being able to answer a question with another question or avoiding answering a question by quickly changing the focus (you will often hear politicians start a response with "That's not my understanding, however..." or "I am not aware of those statistics, however...". There's a technique called bridging e.g. "You may ask that, but the more important question is..."
Taking direction - TV presenters will often have an ear link to the direction gallery and have the gallery director talking to them while they are presenting! They may receive training in being able to take direction while presenting. They may also take training in how to read an autocue without making distracting eye movements.
The list goes on and on - storytelling, crisis management, script development, editing, camerawork...
So you see, it's not just a case of looking pretty and smiling. As I said at the beginning it depends on natural talent and ultimately the audience and context. It may well be that a very natural unrehearsed type of presentation is required.
