This is the intro to this month's Quilt of the Month
Welcome to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum's July 2009 Quilt of the Month.
July brings one of the favorite U.S. holidays, Independence Day, celebrated on July 4th. We have recently received a remarkable quilt donation which makes a great choice for a red, white, and blue (AND gold) Quilt of the Month. On June 9th,dozens of quilts from Nebraska and surrounding states, made for the Quilts of Valor program, were displayed at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. The Nebraska stop was one in a cross-country mission to gather specially-made quilts for members of the armed services returning to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. It was quite an event as the caravan of travelers were escorted to our front doors by members of the American Legion Riders who provide an honor guard of motorcycle riders to show respect for service members and their families.
Following the acceptance of the regional quilts by Quilts of Valor director Catherine Roberts, she and Director of Operations Gail Belmont presented the IQSC with the quilt you will view this month. It is an outstanding example of contemporary quiltmaking and will be cherished as a valued historical object of material culture from this part of the 21st century.
