how can i get over this weight-loss hump?
i'm a 44 year old man with a lot of stamina, a strong heart, and a burning desire to get down to my target weight of 175 pounds by the end of may '07.
now at 240 lbs., i have lost 40 pounds in just over 4 months, simply by walking nearly every evening for 60 to 90 minutes, and by cutting some -- just some -- of the bad food from my diet. fewer pepsis, less dressing on salads, tons more fresh fruit and water.
but i've hit a wall. can't get under 240 pounds. i want to know any tips to start that stuff coming off again, and quickly. how much will adding anaerobic exercise (lifting weights) speed up the process? how about the alternative i'd prefer (because of the cost and ease of use): buying a heavy bag and hitting it for 20 minutes per night before or after my walks (which sometimes include some intervals of running).

Aside from cutting out ALL sodas, diet included, limiting your intake of processed foods and replacing them with fresh foods and drinking at least 64 ounces of water every day...adding weight training will increase muscle mass (although might cause you to gain weight but you need to start measuring inches when trying to lose fat). Muscle mass burns more calories while you're sleeping so pump the iron if you can. Hitting the bag is great exercise, too.
To get out of your slump, up your water intake to 108 oz. a day; this is hard, but it helps a lot. Also, I'd HIGHLY recommend doing a food diary like http://www.myfooddiary.com It's proven that people who track what they eat/drink lose weight and keep it off long term vs. people who don't. You'd be amazed at how many calories you are probably taking in that you don't realize. Also on MyFoodDiary.com many of the dieters there have great tips for getting out of a plateau, such as eating your 'weight loss' calorie allowance for a few days and then eating your 'maintenance calories' for 2 days and then going back to your 'weight loss' allowance. Keeps your body from thinking you're starving it to death, thus making sure it doesn't hold on to fat for dear life.
Also understand that losing weight and eating healthy is a lifestyle that you must maintain your entire life. You really have to cut the bad food out and save it for special occasions or treats now and then.

Slow motion water bag explosion
Possible to speed-hike 70 miles in two days?
I'm an experienced hiker and most of my past experience has been steep elevation gains with a 40lb pack. Now I plan to thru hike a graded 70 miles trail starting Friday evening (after work) until Sunday (afternoon...evening) carrying a 3L reservoir pack, light sleeping bag, compass, map, knife, and a spare water bottle or two. There is water available every 12 miles via trailhead fountains so I'll refill at each stop. This is semi-arid, mountain lion, rattlesnake country. I'll be hiking alone. I figure 10-12 hour days, dawn to dusk, at 2.5-3mph should do the trick; jogging on flat and downward slopes. I have two concerns - 1. that a 3mph average cannot be achieved and I'll miss my pickup; 2. that hiking dawn to dusk, perhaps into the night (see #1), puts undue risk with a puma attack or rattlesnake activity.
Is this achievable?

If in fact your in the kinda shape necessary for such a feat Go for it. I think the speed factor is a bit tuff to attain though. I have in my youth hiked downhill 25 miles in one day along the upper kern 127 miles total in 1 week. I don't know what the record book is for one day distance But a marathon is 22 miles and even the best do it in a couple of hours. For safety I would get a better support team, if you could get folks out at forty mile check points that would be good. Use one of them satellite GPS tracking devices that sends out a signal so that your support team can track you. Good lighting is a must for the night and will add a lot of weight. I have a unit that is incredibly bright on my mountain bike but it ways at least a couple of pounds. Add a radio GM-RS with the longest range possible too. I wouldn't worry so much about critters, never had a problem with them and since your moving fast you will probably scare the hell out of them first.

Well your lucky, cause when i went it was in the summer, yet there was overcast and rainy. My dad and i had no water and a bag of popcorn but we pressed on till we got to that point but had to turn around to met the ship before it left us. But it was indeed worth every step and the clouds let up every now and then to where i could get some good shots.

B/H we both know you are so entrenched in apollo fantasy story I could pretty much show you ANY EVIDENCE even the exact set the filming was done with the astronauts on the set and a newspaper in their hands with the date and time of the mission included and you would STILL would not believe it.
